Digital Music Libraries: Librarian Perspectives and the Challenges Ahead

    Get PDF
This paper reports the results of a survey targeting current members of the Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) that investigated the extent to which the current designs and structures of digital music libraries meet the needs of librarians in collecting, preserving, organizing, and disseminating diverse types of music documents. The challenges and barriers experienced in hosting digital collections are discussed. The gap between the current and ideal functionalities, as well as the future possibilities, are explored.

Timbre from Sound Synthesis and High-level Control Perspectives

    Get PDF
International audienceExploring the many surprising facets of timbre through sound manipulations has been a common practice among composers and instrument makers of all times. The digital era radically changed the approach to sounds thanks to the unlimited possibilities offered by computers that made it possible to investigate sounds without physical constraints. In this chapter we describe investigations on timbre based on the analysis by synthesis approach that consists in using digital synthesis algorithms to reproduce sounds and further modify the parameters of the algorithms to investigate their perceptual relevance. In the first part of the chapter timbre is investigated in a musical context. An examination of the sound quality of different wood species for xylophone making is first presented. Then the influence of instrumental control on timbre is described in the case of clarinet and cello performances. In the second part of the chapter, we mainly focus on the identification of sound morphologies, so called invariant sound structures responsible for the evocations induced by environmental sounds by relating basic signal descriptors and timbre descriptors to evocations in the case of car door noises, motor noises, solid objects, and their interactions

Integrating Dataverse and Archivematica for Research Data Preservation - iPRES 2019 Amsterdam

    No full text
Scholars Portal sponsored Artefactual Systems Inc. to develop the ability for the preservation processing application Archivematica to receive packages from Dataverse, a popular repository platform for uploading, curating, and accessing research data. The integration was released as part of Archivematica 1.8 in November 2018. This paper situates the integration project in the broader context of research data preservation; describes the scope and history of the project and the features and functionalities of the current release; and concludes with a discussion of the potential for future developments to meet additional use cases, service models and preservation approaches for research data

Analysis, Performance, and Tension Perception of an Unmeasured Prelude for Harpsichord

This study focuses on the relationships between music analysis, performance, and tension perception. Part 1 examines harpsichordists’ analyses and performances of an unmeasured prelude—a semi-improvisatory genre open to interpretive freedom. Twelve harpsichordists performed the Prélude non mesuré No. 7 by Louis Couperin on a harpsichord equipped with a MIDI console and submitted a formal analysis. Using a curve-fitting approach, we investigated the correspondence between analyzed segmentations and group-final lengthening. We found that harpsichordists also employed “group-final anticipation,” involving deceleration before, and acceleration through, analyzed boundaries. In Part 2, three listener groups (harpsichordists, musicians, and nonmusicians) continuously rated tension for 12 performances. [...

Communicating voice emphasis in harpsichord performance

We investigated the means used by harpsichordists to communicate voice-specific melodic emphasis. Twelve harpsichordists were asked to perform a short Baroque polyphonic piece by Frescobaldi (1583-1643) on a harpsichord equipped with a MIDI console. Three conditions were tested, each requiring performers to emphasize a particular voice in the piece (soprano, alto, tenor). Four parameters were analyzed: velocity, note onset asynchrony, timing deviations, and articulation. Mean onset asynchronies were much larger than those observed in organ or piano performance, averaging more than 100 ms between outer voices. However, asynchronies did not vary significantly between conditions, suggesting that they do not play a major role in communicating voice emphasis. On average, notes belonging to the upper three voices were struck with a higher velocity and played with a more detached articulation when they were emphasized. Although timing deviation patterns were globally similar across all conditions, we observed local differences that corresponded to passages in which a specific melodic gesture was accentuated by means of ritenuto (tempo deceleration)
